Do colourless green voices speak furiously? Linkages between phonetic and visual perception in synaesthesia
نویسنده
چکیده
Synaesthesia is an unusual phenomenon, in which additional sensory perceptions are triggered by apparently unrelated sensory or conceptual stimuli. The main foci of this presentation lie in vowel sound colour and voice-induced synaesthesia. While grapheme-colour synaesthesia has been intensively researched using various methodologies (neurological studies, extensive interviews, and behavioural experiments), few studies have approached types of synaesthesia based on vocal inducers with detailed acoustic-phonetic and colorimetric analyses. This approach is taken here in order to examine synaesthesiae that have speech sounds and/or the sounds of voices as inducers.

Social perception in synaesthesia for colour.
Synaesthesia is a rare phenomenon in which stimulation in one modality (e.g., audition) evokes a secondary percept not associated with the first (e.g., colour). Prior work has suggested links between synaesthesia and other neurodevelopmental conditions that are linked to altered social perception abilities. With this in mind, here we sought to examine social perception abilities in grapheme-col...
متن کاملIntegrating speech information across talkers, gender, and sensory modality: female faces and male voices in the McGurk effect.
Studies of the McGurk effect have shown that when discrepant phonetic information is delivered to the auditory and visual modalities, the information is combined into a new percept not originally presented to either modality. In typical experiments, the auditory and visual speech signals are generated by the same talker. The present experiment examined whether a discrepancy in the gender of the...

Coloured hearing synaesthesia (from the Greek syn [union] and aisthesls [sensation]), has been known to the scientific community for over 300 years and yet has gone relatively unlnvestigated. In this revlew we chart recent research Into the various forms of synaesthesia and contrast accounts of acquired and developmental forms of the condition. We also revlew the competing theories proposed to ...

Synaesthesia is characterised by idiosyncratic ectopic sensations which commonly take the form of coloured visual impressions evoked by touch or hearing. We studied six late-blind individuals who have retained synaesthetic colour perception. Four of them had been without any form of genuine colour vision for more than 10 years. All perceived colours when they heard or thought about letters, num...
متن کاملAn Overview of Contemporary Findings and Controversies
Research on synaesthesia is undergoing something of a renaissance, having initially been a hot topic in psychology and philosophy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One hundred years ago investigators failed to define an objective framework within which to characterise the phenomenon, and so interest in the topic waned. With the cognitive revolution and the rapid rise of new experimenta...
